When’s the best day to buy cheap tickets?

Wednesday, says Travelocity. That is, if you’re flying domestic, and your trip is less than two weeks away (which is a giant caveat). Travelocity says all airlines release tickets each Wednesday for weekend travel this weekend and next. So says CNN.com here in The best time to buy everything.

Here’s what the article says:

For all the seeming complexity that goes into the price of airfare, the answer to when some of the cheapest tickets can be found is surprisingly simple: Wednesday.

That’s when airlines release their available seats for the upcoming weekend and the weekend after, says Travelocity’s Dominique Phillip.

Phillip, along with other travel agents, said it’s still best to book a domestic flight at least two weeks in advance, and even further ahead for international travel. But if the two-week window isn’t an option for you, she advised delaying the purchase even more, to a few days before you fly, as fares from 14 to 7 days ahead of departure tend to be the most expensive.

I talked to a few travel agents and they also suggested that if you need to book last minute that for the cheapest flights international, Asia and Hawaii especially, your best bet is to get a travel package deal for the hotel and flight, or hotel car and flights. I have found that with the travel packages that you get a better discount hotel cheaper than if you booked it separate so you win twice!

In my experience, for domestic I always had luck 45 to 60 days prior to travel. You can also try to check out trend at farecast now http://www.bingtravel.com. It tells you when it the right time to buy. For international travel it is good to go through travel agent rather than online. Multiple times I had luck with WorldWinger Travel. You can find their details on their website at http://www.worldwinger.com. They have great negotiated fare which was always cheaper that what was available online or anyother travel agents.
